Latte please

Down town with Jessica, I ordered a cup of tea;

Jess: – A cup of coffee, please. Uhm…let’s go for latte.
Waitress: – One cup of tea and one latte [laahtey].
Me: – It’s latte [latte]…not laahtey.
Waitress: – ??
Jess: – Michel, please. Shut up now.
Me: – It’s annoying.

Why do they have to pronounce it laahtey, what’s wrong with latte. It IS latte, should be.

Huggies and kisses
/Michel
